Roast brussels sprouts in air fryer to make the best crispy brussels sprouts

I firmly believe that if you don’t like brussels sprouts, you just aren’t making them correctly. They need to be crispy.

I have been on the hunt for the best possible way to crisp your brussels sprouts. The truth is when you get them at a restaurant and every bite is perfectly crisped, they probably deep fried them.

The good news is that you can get that same crisp and flavor using an air fryer!! Just cut your brussels sprouts, toss them in oil, season them, and let them crisp up.

This recipe results in a brussel sprout that is tender on the inside with crispy outer leaves. You can easily change the taste of this recipe by adding different seasoning blends or toppings.

Kitchen tools

  • Air fryer
  • Sharp knife and cutting board

Serving suggestions

These crispy brussels sprouts are my go to side dish for easy weeknight dinners. If I want to make my whole meal in the air fryer, I serve them with this easy air fryer meatloaf or air fryer salmon bites. For a comforting meal I serve them with this bruschetta chicken, French onion pork chops, or instant pot chicken and rice.

I also like to make them for meal prep to get some veggies into quick salads. I even like them for breakfast alongside a hard boiled egg and some chicken sausage.

Ingredients

  • Brussels sprouts
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Pepper

Ingredient substitutions and additions

Feel free to use any kind of oil that you like to air fry. Sometimes I will use a spray avocado oil to make things really easy.

Add additional seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika or cayenne pepper to up the flavor of this simple side dish. I even sometimes use a couple teaspoons of ranch seasoning to make ranch brussels sprouts.

You can use this simple air fryer recipe as a frame work for air frying any vegetable. Cut them into uniform sizes, toss in oil, season and air fryer until crispy.

topping ideas

Once you make crispy brussels sprouts in the air fryer, you can top them with all kinds of different topping idea to make them more flavorful.

  • Drizzle balsamic reduction or balsamic glaze over top of the cooked brussels sprouts and toss in some toasted pistachios for a slightly sweet flavor boost.
  • Freshly grate parmesan cheese and lemon zest over top for cheesy lemony air fryer brussles sprouts
  • Toss the cooked brussels sprouts in crispy cooked bacon and sliced dates for a salty sweet combo
  • Mix sriracha with some honey and toss the sprouts in this mixture and then top with crumbled feta for the perfect sweet and spicy side dish

how to make air fryer brussels sprouts

Step 1: Prep the brussels sprouts

To begin, trim the ends off the brussels sprouts and slice in half. Place brussels sprouts in a mixing bowl and toss in oil.

Then, sprinkle salt and pepper on sprouts and toss again until they are evenly coated in the seasoning.

Step 2: Air fry the brussels sprouts

Place brussels sprouts in an air fryer basket with some space between each sprout. Air fry at 425F for 6 minutes.

Remove from the basket from air fryer and give the sprouts a shake and return to the air fryer for another 5 minutes.

Best if enjoyed immediately while hot!

Sauce Recipes to serve with these air fried brussels sprouts

I like to serve these crispy brussels sprouts with creamy sauces for dipping. These are some of my favorite options.

  • Homemade Spicy Mayo
  • Roasted Garlic Aioli
  • Healthy Homemade Ranch Dressing
  • Whole30 Buffalo Ranch
Above view of cooked air fryer brussles sprouts in an air fryer baskey

Can I make these in the oven?

Yes. Roast the brussels sprouts on a wire rack at 425F for 20 minutes

Which air fryer do you use?

I have a Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven. I love that its metal instead of plastic.

Can I air fry frozen brussels sprouts?

Yes! You can air fry brussels sprouts directly from frozen. Leave frozen brussels sprouts whole, spray with a little oil and season liberally. Air fry for an extra 3 minutes to make sure they’re crispy.

Can I double this recipe?

If you want to double this recipe, I recommend cooking them in 2 batches so that the sprouts have enough space to get crispy in the air fryer.

Storage and reheating

These brussels sprouts are best if enjoyed immediately. If you want to make them for meal prep and use them later, you can slightly undercook them.

Cool and transfer to an airtight container in the fridge. Store in the refrigerator and quickly reheat in your air fryer at 400F until warmed through – about 5 minutes.

Super simple and gave the Brussels sprouts great crunch. I topped with pre-made balsamic glaze and it was delicious. Never making Brussels sprouts any other way now!

I made this as a side the other night and my brother who isn’t a big fan of brussel sprouts loved it! I think the key is the char! Makes it taste very sweet!

SOO GOOD! The only way I eat my brussel sprouts! I usually find a sauce recipe on her blog like one of her aoilis or mustard sauces and use it as a dipping sauce for these crispy greens 😍

We go to a local wine spot that has amazing Brussels and these are even better. Simple to make yet packed with flavor, the char from the burnt pieces are so tasty! Definite keeper for the weekly menu plan.
