Switch up your weeknight dinner routine with French Onion Pork Chops. Sear pork chops, caramelize onions, and top with cheese for a twist on the classic French onion flavor.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- New twist on classic flavors – I have always loved combining sour cream and onion soup mix to create French onion dip. French onion soup is such a nostalgic taste, so I loved mixing it up by adding it to these pork chops.
- Weeknight Meal Staple – These French onion pork chops use only a few ingredients and have very little prep time. With a total time just over thirty minutes, it is a great weeknight dinner.
- One pan cozy winter favorite – These French onion pork chops are perfect for a cozy winter meal that only requires one pot. Serve them up with your favorite side like mashed potatoes, roasted veggies or rice for a comforting weeknight meal.
How do you make pork juicy?
Pork chops can dry out easily, so it’s important to monitor the temperature. I like to use a meat thermometer to check for an 145F internal temperature.
Then I let the pork rest for a few minutes before serving. This temperature makes sure you get tender pork chops. The rest allows the juices to soak up for juicy pork chops.
Serving Suggestions
I like to serve french onion pork chops with greens like my shaved brussels sprout salad, green beans almondine, or a simple salad with avocado ranch dressing. For a bit more crunch, add this classic creamy coleslaw to your menu.
French onion soup pork chops with my crock pot applesauce in the slow cooker would be a great update on a classic combination.
To add even more coziness to this meal, these flaky butter biscuits are a delicious side with this meal. Mashed red potatoes would also be excellent with this dish, or white rice would be a great simple addition.
Ingredients
- Boneless pork chops – to get a good sear on the pork chops, make sure to pat them dry with a paper towel before cooking.
- Salt and pepper – add salt and pepper to your pork chops to season them and make sure they have a good flavor. You could also add a bit of garlic powder to season your pork.
- Olive oil – you can use any cooking oil that you like to sautee your pork chops. I usually use extra virgin olive oil.
- Yellow onion – slice your yellow onion and cook them down to create a sweet caramelized onion. Be patient because it can take a bit for the onions to truly caramelize.
- Brown sugar – add the brown sugar to your onion to increase the caramelization and bring out the sweetness.
- Onion powder – the onion powder helps you achieve the classic French onion taste. You can omit this or even add more depending on your preferences!
- Beef broth – beef stock keeps your pork chops juicy and create a bit of sauce like a french onion gravy.
- Gruyere cheese – I love gruyere cheese for the french onion soup pork chops. It makes it feel like french onion soup, and it creates the perfect melt.
Ingredient Substitutions
You could use bone-in pork chops instead of boneless, but you will need to add cooking time to accommodate the bone. You could also try this recipe with chicken breast instead of pork.
In place of gruyere, you could use your favorite melting cheese, such as swiss cheese or provolone cheese. Cheddar would be good if you like a sharper cheese.
If you would like to make even more of a gravy, you could also flour with the broth to thicken the sauce. If you have it, fresh thyme would add great flavor your sauce too.
For some nostalgia and crunch, you could add french fried onions on top of your pork chops. You could even make some crispy fried shallots at home and sprinkle those over top.
How to make
Step 1: Slice Onions and saute Pork Chops
Pat pork chops dry with paper towel. Mix salt and pepper together and season pork chops on both sides with the mixture.
Slice the yellow onion in half and then into thin slices and preheat the oven to 375F (Image 1).
Heat ½ tbsp of oil in a large oven safe skillet over medium heat. Allow the oil to get hot and then place the chops in the skillet to sear. Cook the pork chops for 3 minutes each side (Image 2).
Step 2: Saute the onions
Remove the pork chops from the large skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Pour the sliced onions into the skillet along with ½ tbsp of oil and 1 tbsp of butter (Image 3).
Allow the onions to cook for 15 minutes tossing frequently.
Season with a pinch of salt and add the brown sugar and onion powder to the skillet. Toss and saute for another 2-3 minutes (Image 4).
Step 3: Add Broth, Bake and enjoy
Pour the beef broth into the skillet and allow the mixture to simmer for 5 minute (Image 5).
Turn off the heat and place pork chops into the pan and top each one with some of the sauteed onions. Top each pork chop with shredded gruyere cheese (Image 6).
Place in the oven to bake for 8-12 minutes depending on thickness of the chops – cook until internal temperature reaches 145F.
Remove from the oven and serve.
Storage and Reheating
Allow the french onion pork chops leftovers to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container in the fridge. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until just warned through.
