Serving Suggestions

You can serve these French toast sticks with all kinds of fun dipping options. At our house we prefer warm maple syrup, but this dish would also be great with chocolate sauce for kids or this homemade pumpkin spice syrup. It would be really fun to add fresh berries like strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries on top too.

To complete your quick breakfast, add roasted red pepper and feta egg bites. For a bigger brunch, make up some air fryer breakfast potatoes and turkey sausage tomato and goat cheese breakfast casserole.

Serve this air fryer french toast recipe with this cold brew coffee recipe and iced shaken espresso. Add a bit of this gingerbread syrup or caramel brulee latte syrup to take it up a notch!

Ingredients

  • Bread – use 4-6 bread slices depending on the size of your loaf. You can use fresh bread, but slightly stale bread works great.
  • Eggs – the eggs will create the basis for your classic french toast flavor. To avoid getting too eggy, make sure to soak the bread rather than dip it.
  • Milk – use whatever milk you would like to make these air fryer french toast sticks
  • Maple syrup – I love adding maple syrup to my egg mixture to sweeten it up and get that maple flavor into the bread.
  • Cinnamon and salt – Add cinnamon and salt to your egg mixture to create the perfect french toast taste. You can also add a dash of vanilla extract if you would like.

Ingredient Substitutions

For the bread, you can use any that you would like. You could use thick bread slices like a Texas toast, or brioche bread which would be so tasty.

To keep this dairy free, you can use oat milk or almond milk in place of regular milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best air fryer?

I use the combination air fryer and toaster oven from Cuisinart and I love how big it is and it is easy to use.

What is the best bread?

You can use whatever you would like for bread. I think a thick slices of bread like brioche or challah bread makes it extra delicious, but any bread will work great.

Can I make these in the oven?

Yes! Set your oven to 325F on convection. Cook your French toast sticks on a metal baking rack for 15 minutes flipping once halfway.

Should I use parchment paper?

I usually spray oil right on the basket of my air fryer, but if you want to keep it easy clean up, you can line the basket with parchment paper first.

How to make Air Fryer French Toast Sticks

Step 1: Cut bread into strips and prepare custard

To begin, slice bread into thirds to make sticks. Then, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt in a bowl.

Step 2: Soak French toast sticks

Next, dip the bread into the custard mixture to soak for about 2 minutes. I don’t like to soak the bread for longer because it can get too soggy and fall apart.

Step 3: Air fry until golden brown

Preheat air fryer to 300F and spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray oil. Then, place French toast sticks in the basket.

Air fry at 300F for 5 minutes, flip and cook for another 5 minutes. Increase the air fryer heat to 400F and cook for another 2 minutes just to brown the French toast sticks. You want them crispy on the outside but still fluffy on the inside.

Finally, serve with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and melted butter.

Storage and reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I recommend reheating it in the toaster oven or air fryer. You can reheat in the microwave, but you will not get the same crispiness. You can also freeze the air fryer French toast sticks for up to 4 months.

Great idea! I would warm them in the toaster oven or regular oven from frozen at 300F until warmed through and then increase the heat a little to crispy them up.
