make your own blue cheese dressing in just 15 minutes

Blue cheese lovers, you are going to want to check this one out. You no longer have to buy store-bought blue cheese dressing.

It is actually so simple and quick to make the best blue cheese dressing at home. This easy blue cheese dressing is rich, creamy, and has just the right amount of tangy.

It is perfect for either a dipping sauce or a salad dressing. And you should definitely try it on a sandwich or burger.

This recipe is also one to keep in your back pocket for football season, too. Blue cheese dressing is the perfect match for some chicken wings, after all!

Kitchen tools

  • Measuring spoons and measuring cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Fork for making blue cheese crumbles
  • Immersion blender

Serving suggestions

Real blue cheese lovers know you can enjoy a blue cheese salad dressing with just about anything. This homemade blue cheese dressing can be customized to be a thicker or thinner consistency so you can enjoy it as a dip, a dressing, or a spread.

Make a batch on the weekend and enjoy it as a dip for some chicken wings and use the leftovers for salads throughout the week. I’ll warn you though that it is so tasty it may not even make it the full week!

The most classic use for a blue cheese dressing is on a wedge salad. This wedge salad recipe with bacon, tomatoes, crunchy iceberg lettuce and crumbled bleu cheese is the perfect compliment for this chunky blue cheese dressing.

I would definitely serve this with my buffalo chicken bites recipe or with these grilled buffalo chicken tenders.

Ingredients for making a blue cheese salad dressing

Ingredients

  • Blue cheese
  • Mayonnaise
  • Sour cream
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Hot sauce
  • Ground white pepper
  • Optional: milk or buttermilk to thin

Ingredient substitutions

There are many different cheeses that fall under the label of blue cheese. You may choose to use a gorgonzola, a roquefort, a stilton or any other blue cheese that you like.

I think that this recipe tastes best with white pepper, but I know not everyone has it in their kitchen. If that is the case for you, simply use some black pepper.

Feel free to add salt as you like. I find the cheese and mayonnaise to be salty enough, but everyone has different preferences.

You can use plain greek yogurt in place of the sour cream or in place of the sour cream and mayonnaise.

Seasoning Options

You can also customize the homemade blue cheese dressing with your favorite seasonings. Fresh parsley or chives would be a great addition to add even more depth to the flavor.

Add more spice with some cayenne pepper powder. Garlic lovers can definitely add some freshly grated garlic or garlic powder to this blue cheese dressing recipe.

Step by step assembly of homemade blue cheese dressing recipe

How to make homemade blue cheese dressing

Step 1: Combine the Ingredients

To start, crumble blue cheese in a mixing bowl. Add the mayo, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and white pepper to the bowl with the blue cheese.

Step 2: Blend the ingredients

Next, place an immersion blender in the bowl and pulse a few times until all of the ingredients are combined. It is okay if there are still some chunks of blue cheese in the dressing.

If you want a thinner dressing, add small amounts of milk to the dressing and stir until you reach your desired consistency. Otherwise, serve and enjoy!

make ahead tips and storage

Once prepared, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container. I like to store my homemade dressings in a mason jar.

Store this homemade blue cheese dressing in the fridge for up to one week. You can refresh this dressing each time you use it by adding a splash of buttermilk or milk and vinegar and giving it a little whisk.

I’ve been making this ever since you out the recipe in reels a while back. I probably make it about once a month, and use it for salads, for dipping, tossing roasted potatoes or veggies in it. It’s so good, the best blue cheese dressing I’ve made so far.
