Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Best party appetizer – These pinwheels take ham and cheese sandwiches to the next level. They are the perfect snack for a football game.
- Easy to make – You just need a few ingredients to put these pinwheels together. Add everything to the dough, roll it up, bake and enjoy.

Serving suggestions
If you are making this ham and cheese pinwheel recipe for a party, you can make a whole appetizer spread. Stuffed mushroom dip or bacon ranch chicken cheese dip are great options. For an easy snack to pick at, I love making a ranch chex mix.
For an additional hearty appetizer, try these Philly cheesesteak sliders. To balance out the savory, I also love to add a sweet option, like this peanut butter apple dip.

Ingredients
- Pizza dough – I use the refrigerated dough in the tube but you can use regular pizza dough
- Mayonnaise – mayo mixes with the mustard to make the perfect creamy sauce for the pinwheels
- Dijon mustard – dijon is my favorite mustard to pair with these pinwheels
- Garlic – mince your garlic finely to add to your sauce
- Ground black pepper – I like to add a bit of pepper to the mustard and mayo mixture for more flavor
- Sharp cheddar cheese – I like freshly grated best for this recipe, but you can also use pre-shredded
- Deli ham – get your favorite deli slices of ham to use for your pinwheels
- Melted butter and parmesan cheese – these are optional, but they take the pinwheels to the next level
Ingredient Substitutions
The freshly grated cheddar cheese is the perfect melty cheese, but you could also use gouda or swiss cheese.
Instead of ham slices, you could substitute or add any meat you prefer. Turkey, roast beef, or pepperoni would all be delicious.
I love using pizza dough, but you can also use puff pastry or crescent roll dough. The crescent dough sheet is great if you would prefer not to roll out your dough.
For your mayo and mustard mixture, you could add worcestershire sauce, onion powder and garlic powder if you want. I don’t find it needs salt, but you can add it if you would like. You could even use honey mustard in place of dijon if you want a sweeter sauce. For a creamier sauce, substitute the mayo for a cream cheese mixture.
The melted butter and parmesan create the perfect golden brown crust. You could do an egg wash to give it some shine. Poppy seeds or fresh parsley would be great toppings as well.
If you want a version that you don’t need to bake, assemble these ingredients in flour tortillas instead for a quick and easy snack.

How to make
Step 1: Roll Out Dough and Make Mustard Mixture
Remove pizza dough from the fridge about 30 minutes before assembly. Preheat oven to 400F and grease or line an 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper.
Mix the mayo, mustard, garlic and black pepper in a small mixing bowl. Lightly flour a large cutting board or counter. Roll the pizza dough into an 11 in x 14 in rectangle (Image 1). Brush the surface of the pizza dough with a generous layer of the mayo and mustard mixture (Image 2).

Step 2: add Cheese and Ham
Sprinkle the cheese all over the dough – be sure to cover all the way to the edges. Starting on the long side, layer the slices deli ham over the dough covering all the way along the long length, but only ⅔ of the short length (Image 3).
Roll the dough up into a tube starting from the ham covered portion of the long side (Image 4).

Step 3: Cut and Bake
Use a serrated knife or unscented dental floss to cut the tube into 9 evenly size slices (Image 5). Arrange in an even layer in the baking pan (Image 6) and bake at 400F for 24 minutes.
Brush your easy ham and cheese roll ups with melted butter and sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Allow to cool slightly before serving!

Storage and reheating
Store your leftovers of ham and cheese pinwheels in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To freeze, wrap the unbaked pinwheels in plastic wrap and freeze for up to one month. To reheat, place on a baking sheet and heat in the oven or toaster oven at 350F until warmed through.
