Serving Suggestions

I love to pair this cast iron pan pizza with some simple greens or vegetables. You could make a lemon kale caesar, or a bowl of garden salad with some mason jar salad dressing.

If you want a simple vegetable, you could do air fryer brussels sprouts or air fryer asparagus.

For another pizza option, try this sheet pan pizza next.

Ingredients

  • Olive oil – I used extra virgin olive oil for some added flavor, but you can also use a neutral oil if you do not have it
  • Pizza dough – ready to bake pizza dough is my preference for a quick and easy meal, but you can always feel free to use homemade pizza dough
  • Pizza sauce – use your favorite jarred pizza sauce for your pizza, or make your own with tomatoes
  • Mozzarella cheese – grab a bag of pre-shredded mozzarella or shred fresh mozzarella yourself
  • Your favorite toppings – use anything you would like: pepperoni, sausage, or veggies like peppers, onions, mushrooms or black olives

Ingredient Substitutions

To make this cast iron pizza recipe gluten-free, you can use a gluten-free dough. For dairy free, you can sub vegan cheese for the mozzarella cheese.

This cast iron skillet pizza recipe is written for a classic red sauce pizza, but you could also make a white pizza.

I love pepperoni on top, but you can have fun with any protein options. Italian sausage or ham would be great options. Then garnish your pizza with a teaspoon or so red pepper flakes, garlic powder, basil, oregano or anything else you enjoy.

If you have flour or bread flour, salt, and yeast on hand, you can make your own dough rather than going to the grocery store for store-bought pizza dough. You can also make your own tomato sauce to do everything from scratch!

I like making this pizza a thin crust for the perfect balance of chewy and crispy. You can also make this more of a deep-dish pizza but stretching the dough up the sides of the cast iron.

How to make

Step 1: Prep the Dough

At least 2 hours before baking, brush olive oil along the bottom and sides of the cast iron pan. Place the eight ounces of dough in the skillet, cover with plastic wrap and allow to sit at room temperature for 2 hours (Image 1).

Preheat oven to 425F. Spread dough in an even layer along the bottom of the skillet (Image 2). Bake just the dough at 425F for 5 minutes.

Step 2: Add sauce and cheese

Remove from the skillet from the oven and top the pizza crust with several tablespoons of marinara sauce (Image 3) and cheese (Image 4) – bring the toppings all the way to the edge of the dough.

Return the skillet to the oven rack and bake for 10 more minutes. Your crust should be golden brown and the cheese should bubble slightly.

Step 3: Garnish and enjoy

Top with a sprinkle of freshly grated parmesan cheese and fresh basil. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the skillet with a spatula and cutting into slices.

Storage and reheating

Once cooled, store your pizza slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat in the oven or toaster oven until the cheese is warm and melted.
