Serving suggestions
To add some vegetables to your meal, you could make air fryer asparagus or brussels sprouts to serve alongside your casserole. You could also do a simple salad with mason jar dressing. This lemon kale caesar would also be perfect on the side of your casserole.
For a quick and easy dessert to follow up your weeknight meal, you could make these chocolate parfaits.

Ingredients
- Ground beef – you can use any ratio of ground beef for this recipe
- Yellow onion – finely dice your onion so it blends into your sloppy joe mixture once it softens
- Bell pepper – I used a red bell pepper but orange, yellow, or green bell pepper could work
- Kosher salt, garlic powder, ground black pepper – this simple spice mixture is all you need to bring out the sloppy joe flavors
- Tomato sauce – canned tomato sauce keeps this recipe so easy to make
- Water – a bit of water helps your sauce reach the perfect consistency
- Ketchup – this will both sweeten and add some extra flavor to your sloppy joe casserole
- Yellow mustard – the mustard gives the sauce the perfect tang
- Brown sugar – the brown sugar adds just enough sweetness to your sauce
- Worcestershire sauce – just a bit of worcestershire deepens all of the flavors in your sloppy joe
- Biscuits – use your favorite brand of premade biscuits to place on top of your casserole
Ingredient Substitutions
I used ground beef, but you can also make this recipe with ground turkey or ground chicken. If you are using a very lean meat, add a bit of olive or vegetable oil to your pan when cooking.
In place of water, you can also use chicken broth or beef broth for added flavor. For the biscuits, you can also substitute the tube of cornbread swirls. To make it a bit more decadent, brush some melted butter on top of your biscuits.
If you would like to add some cheese, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of your beef. You can also add canned corn to your vegetables for this dish. Drain the corn and add it to the beef mixture. For some additional smokiness, add a teaspoon of chili powder to your sauce. If you are looking for more heat, add up to a tablespoon of hot sauce.

How to make
Step 1: Brown the Beef and Make Sauce
Preheat oven to 375F. Heat an oven safe skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Brown ground beef and break into crumbles (Image 1).
While that browns mix the fifteen ounces of tomato sauce, water, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and a tablespoon worcestershire sauce together (Image 2).

Step 2: Simmer the Sauce
Season browned ground beef with salt, teaspoon garlic powder and pepper. Add the onion, bell pepper (Image 3) and sauce to the skillet (Image 4). Stir thoroughly and simmer 10 minutes (Image 5).
While that simmers, open the can of biscuits and cut 6 of them into quarters (you can use all 8 biscuits, but I find 6 to be the perfect amount). If your skillet is not oven safe, you can transfer the mixture to a baking dish before adding the biscuits.

Step 3: Add Biscuits and Bake
Arrange the biscuit pieces on top of the meat mixture (Image 6) and place skillet in the oven. Bake at 375F for 15 minutes until the biscuits are golden brown.
If the biscuits are browning too quickly, cover with aluminum foil. Serve immediately with pickles and shredded cheddar cheese to sprinkle on top.

Storage, reheating and Freezing
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For best results, I recommend removing the biscuits and storing them separately. To reheat, put the casserole in the microwave or oven until warmed through.
To freeze, follow all steps except adding the biscuits. Place in a freezer safe container before baking and cover tightly. You do not need to thaw it. Bake the casserole directly from frozen covered at 325F for 1 hour, and add the biscuits toward the end of baking.
