This Whipped Goat Cheese Dip is a great appetizer and party food. Whip goat cheese until creamy then add sweet or savory toppings.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick and easy – If you need a last-minute appetizer, this whipped goat cheese is for you. It only takes ten minutes to make.
- Customizable to your liking – Sweet or savory? This dish can be customized to be either and if you can’t decide, make a batch of both or split one batch into two so you can vary the toppings!
- Make-ahead dip – This whipped goat cheese dip is a great make-ahead option. Just whip up the base, store it in the fridge, and then add your toppings when you are ready to serve.
Serving Suggestions
Serve this dip with crackers, chips, pretzels, pita chips, toasted bread, or fresh veggies of your choice such as bell peppers, carrots, celery, or cauliflower.
I like to make homemade crostini to dip in this whipped goat cheese recipe. Cut a loaf of crusty bread like a baguette on a bias, drizzle with olive oil and toast in the oven at 350F until golden brown.
If you are making this whipped goat cheese dip for a party, it can be fun to do a full spread of different dips. Roasted Garlic Hummus is another great savory option and this Chocolate Dip for Fruit is a great sweet choice.
Dip Ingredients
- Goat Cheese – Goat cheese makes this dip creamy, tangy, and just downright delicious.
- Greek Yogurt – Greek yogurt makes the base of this dish and can help you customize the consistency and texture of the dip to your liking.
- Honey – Honey balances out the tanginess of the goat cheese, adding a slightly sweet component.
- Lemon Zest – A little bit of lemon zest adds a slight citrusy element, making this dish even more flavorful.
Topping Ingredients
- Jelly/Jam – I love adding red pepper jelly or mixed berry jam but other flavors of jelly or jam would also be delicious.
- Chopped Nuts – I like adding chopped candied pecans or toasted almonds as a topping for this whipped goat cheese dip.
- Honey – Whether you choose spicy or regular, honey is a great topping choice.
- Herbs – Fresh finely chopped rosemary, parsley, or chives add a ton of flavor. You could also use basil, oregano, thyme, or any other of your favorite herbs.
- Lemon Zest – I love lemon so I love having lemon zest as both a base ingredient and a topping.
- Salt and Pepper – Can’t go wrong with the classic salt and pepper. I add ground black pepper and flakey sea salt to this dip.
Ingredient Substitutions
I like using greek yogurt in this whipped goat cheese dip because it adds some protein but you could use regular yogurt if you prefer. You could also try this dip with sour cream or even heavy cream, but it will make a slightly thinner cheese mixture.
The toppings of this whipped goat cheese dip are endless. I usually do one batch with spicy honey, lemon zest, black pepper, and parsley. On the other one, I use red pepper jelly, chopped candied pecans, and fresh rosemary.
Feel free to get even more creative with the toppings though! Other ideas that come to mind are caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes, bacon bits, pomegranate seeds, a drizzle of olive oil or balsamic vinegar, or roasted red pepper flakes.
How to make
Step 1: Blend Ingredients for base
To start, add goat cheese, yogurt, and honey to a food processor (Image 1). Zest a lemon into the food processor until you have about 1 tsp of zest (Image 2).
Next, run the food processor to combine the ingredients and whip the goat cheese (Image 3). Test for the thickness of dip – some like it thicker than others. If you prefer it to be thinner add up to ¼ cup more of yogurt and run the food processor again.
Step 2: add toppings, and serve
After that, spread the smooth whipped dip into a serving bowl. I like to use 2 bowls so I can vary the toppings (Image 4).
If serving immediately, add whatever toppings you like. I usually do one with spicy honey, lemon zest, black pepper, and parsley. On the other one I use red pepper jelly, chopped candied pecans, and fresh rosemary – this one is perfect for the holidays! I also like it with mixed berry jam and toasted almond slices.
If serving later, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator without toppings. Spread into a bowl and add toppings just before serving.
Storage
This whipped goat cheese dip will stay good in the fridge for up to 4 days. If you want to make this dip ahead of time, whip the goat cheese with the yogurt and honey, then store in the fridge. Wait until just before serving to add any of the toppings.
