Serving suggestions

If you are making Italian hoagie sliders for a party, serve it alongside appetizers like pizza dip, crockpot buffalo chicken dip, and ranch chex mix. Fried pickle dip is also a favorite appetizer for a party.

These Italian sandwich sliders would also be delicious with tater tots, onion rings, potato chips, or french fries.

If you like these sliders, try these Philly cheesesteak sliders next.

Ingredients

  • Slider rolls – I use King’s Hawaiian rolls brand, but you can use any slider rolls you would like
  • Provolone cheese – I love provolone for a classic Italian hoagie, but you can use any cheese you would like
  • Deli sliced ham – use your favorite deli ham to make these sliders
  • Deli sliced genoa salami – I prefer genoa salami, but you could also add in a spicy salami to heat it up a bit
  • Butter – use the melted butter to brush the top of the slider rolls
  • Garlic powder and sesame seeds – I love adding garlic powder and sesame seed to top the rolls for extra flavor
  • Tomato – add thin slices of your favorite kind of tomato to your Italian sub sliders
  • Mayonnaise and red wine vinegar – Italian sandwiches wouldn’t be complete without some mayo and vinegar
  • Italian seasoning – I add some Italian seasoning to get ever more of those classic flavors on the sliders
  • White onion – for the best texture, slice your onion as thinly as possible
  • Iceberg lettuce – shredded iceberg lettuce is the perfect complement to your Italian hoagie sliders
  • Banana peppers – you can use sliced banana peppers or sliced hot cherry peppers, or omit them if you would prefer your sliders without

Ingredient Substitutions

I love the flavor of hawaiian sweet rolls, but you can use any kind you would like. If you need this recipe to be gluten free, use gluten free slider buns. If you are feeling very ambitious, you can use homemade pull apart rolls to assemble the sliders.

I like to use white onions for this recipe, but for a sharper flavor, you could use red onion or even pickled red onion instead. Instead of banana peppers, you could also add roasted red peppers or pepperoncini peppers.

Provolone is my favorite cheese for these sliders, but cheddar or swiss could also work. If you prefer a softer cheese, thin slices of mozzarella cheese are great too. I love the combination of mayo and vinegar in this recipe, but you could also use a bit of olive oil in place of the mayo. A bit of dijon mustard would also be tasty.

You can mix up the deli meats with whatever combination you like. Pepperoni would be delicious. For a different spin, you could use roast beef to make roast beef sliders instead. You could heat the meats in a skillet rather than in the oven, but I love to do in the oven to keep it easy.

How to make

Step 1: Layer Meat and Cheese and Bake

Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet or shallow baking dish with parchment paper.

Cut the slider rolls in half lengthwise so that you have a sheet of top and bottom rolls. Place the bottom half of the rolls on the baking sheet.

Layer on the provolone cheese, ham and salami (Image 1) – be sure to put the cheese on the bottom so the melty cheese doesn’t stick to the top roll layer to add toppings.

Place the top rolls layer on top of the salami. Melt butter in a small bowl. Brush with the butter mixture on the rolls and sprinkle on about a teaspoon of garlic powder and sesame seeds (Image 2). Bake at 350F for 8-10 minutes.

Step 2: add Toppings

While the sliders bake, cut the tomato into thin slices. Add mayo, vinegar and Italian seasoning to a mixing bowl and whisk together. Add the shredded lettuce to the bowl and toss to combine.

When the sliders are finished baking, transfer to a cutting board. Take off the top roll layer and layer on the thinly sliced tomato and onion (Image 3) – season with salt. Then add the lettuce mixture (Image 4) and finally the banana peppers (Image 5).

Step 3: Cut and Serve

Place the top roll back (Image 6) and cut into individual mini sandwiches – serve immediately! I love serving them on their own, but you could also serve with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.

Storage

These Italian hoagie sliders are best served immediately, but you can store them in the fridge for up to 2 days.

To prepare these ahead of time, follow the steps to layer the meat and cheese on the buns and then place in the fridge. Just before you are ready to serve, heat in the oven and add veggie toppings.
