Leave your veggies off your surf and turf skewers for a more flavorful and even cook

I’m going to tell you something that might surprise you, grilled skewers are SO much better when you leave the veggies off. Take these grilled surf and turf skewers for example. They are all meat, but leaving the veggies off of them allows for a more even cook to each item.

I am not saying you should leave the veggies off your plate entirely, but have you ever tried grilled your meats separately? It’s a game changer. Just like these grilled surf and turf skewers are a barbecue game changer. Step away from burgers and dogs for a minute and upgrade to something a bit more sophisticated, but just as simple to prepare.

What is surf and turf?

The simplest definition of surf and turf is food from both the land and the sea on one plate. Surf and turf can be a steak and lobster combo or maybe even a crab stuffed piece of meat.

My favorite surf and turf recipes always include steak and shrimp. To make these steak and shrimp kabobs simply marinade the cubed steak and raw shrimp. Then, slide onto skewers and cook them on the grill.

Make a fancy surf and turf meal on a budget

This week I am doing a full week of grilling recipes on Mad About Food leading up to Memorial Day weekend and summers start! I am kicking off this grilling week the best way I know how: some grilled surf and turf skewers.

I might be alone in this, but I think there is something so luxurious about having steak and seafood on the same plate. To be fair there isn’t any lobster in this grilled surf and turf skewer recipe, but I still feel very fancy.

For this recipe I used frozen shrimp and sirloin steak. By using these ingredients I can feel fancy AND stay on a budget. That is definitely a backyard barbecue win-win.

What ingredients do I need to make these Grilled Surf and Turf Skewers?

These grilled surf and turf skewers are made with just a few simple ingredients. The basic marinade keeps them flavorful, but also whole30 and paleo compliant.

I used coconut aminos instead of soy to marinate the chicken. If you aren’t worried about using soy or staying whole30 compliant, then soy sauce is a perfect alternative.

You don’t have to plan too far ahead to get these delicious grilled surf and turf skewers on your table. Just be sure to defrost your shrimp, if they’re frozen. Then soak the skewers and marinate the proteins about an hour before your get your food on the grill.

I did not include any sides in the recipe, but these grilled surf and turf skewers go great with any veggies or starches. My favorite way to enjoy them is on a big green salad with lots of fresh summer produce and maybe my green dream dressing. You can also serve it with this creamy corn pasta on the side.

How to make a surf and turf dinner

To make these simple and healthy grilled surf and turf skewers you need just a few simple ingredients. Gather the ingredients and prep the marinades for the proteins and soak the skewers in some water.

If using wood skewers, soak them in water for at least an hour prior to grilling. I like to use reusable metal skewers for grilling.

To prepare the marinades, mince the garlic. Then, separately mix the with avocado oil and coconut aminos for the steak. Then, mix garlic with avocado oil and lemon juice for the shrimp. Toss the proteins in their respective marinades and pop in the fridge for about an hour.

Remove the proteins from the fridge and preheat the grill to medium high heat. Be sure to clean your grill as well! Skewer them separately and then season liberally on all sides with salt and pepper.

Place on the grill and cook the shrimp for about 6 minutes rotating once. Cook the steak for 12 minutes rotating every 2 minutes. The skewers are best if enjoyed immediately, but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

  • Add shrimp to one bowl and cubed steak to another

This came out delicious!!!! I had to cook my shrimp a bit longer than the recipe called for but that’s fine. The marinate of avocado oil and coconut aminos gives the steak such a yummy caramelized flavor! Will deff be grilling this way again soon

I made the shrimp skewers & they came out delicious! Simple yet flavorful & had the most compliments at our BBQ of all things I served. Great way to add a little something to our normal burger & hot dog routine. I was out of avocado oil but swapped it for olive oil & came out great.

Hi Dontay, I have not tested this recipe on the stove so I cannot guarantee it will have the same results but you could use the same ingredients and cook the shrimp and steak on the stove as you normally would.

In the Ingredients list, it calls for Olive oil, but in the Instructions, it calls for to toss the shrimp in Avocado oil. Which is it?

Sorry about that – any oil you have on hand is fine!
