Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Simple fish recipe – I love making fish in the air fryer! It makes the fish so tender with a perfect texture, and makes clean up so easy.
  • Weeknight eating – This dinner comes together in about fifteen minutes. It is quick, easy, and so tasty.
  • Lemony sauce makes it appealing for everyone – If you have family who are not big fish eaters, this recipe is a great intro! It is not very fishy at all, plus it is smothered in an incredible lemony sauce that anyone will love.

Serving suggestions

This air fryer halibut recipe can go with so many different sides. I love serving it with rice, pasta or couscous, because they are really delicious with the lemon caper sauce. An air fryer red potato would be another good carb option.

You could also do simple veggies on the side, like air fryer asparagus or air fryer brussels sprouts. Roasted broccoli would be a great option too. For a salad option, you can make a lemon kale caesar to keep things lemony. You could also get your couscous and veggies in one with this vegetable couscous salad.

Ingredients

  • Halibut – fresh or frozen halibut fillet works! Just be sure to leave time for it to defrost if you use frozen
  • Oil – you can use olive oil spray or brush on oil
  • Kosher salt – I use kosher salt because it is a bit gentler, so if you use table salt, adjust the amount to avoid over salting
  • Garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, black pepper – this simple herby spice blend adds tons of flavor to your halibut
  • Unsalted butter – I recommend unsalted to control the amount of salt in the dish
  • Garlic – finely mince your garlic to incorporate it seamlessly into your sauce
  • Capers – I love capers for a bit of brininess and a depth of flavor
  • Lemon zest and fresh lemon juice – I love using both zest and juice to add citrus and brightness to the sauce. Serve with some slices lemon for extra citrus.

Ingredient Substitutions

This recipe is already gluten free and nut free, and it can be made dairy free by using oil or vegan butter instead of butter.

If you don’t have or want to use halibut, you could use other mild white fish filets like cod, mahi mahi or haddock instead. You could also do this recipe with chicken if you don’t like seafood. Just adjust the cooking time until the chicken reaches 165F.

I love the capers in this recipe, but you could also use chopped olives instead. I love this lemon caper sauce, but you can also use this same method of cooking and serve with tartar sauce or a mango salsa instead. There are so many ways to play around with this recipe.

For a bit of smokiness or heat, add some smoked paprika and cayenne pepper to your spice blend.

Feel free to add any other herbs you enjoy as well! Fresh parsley or chives, along with some parmesan cheese, would be great for garnishing the dish.

How to make

Step 1: Season the fish

Pat halibut dry with a paper towel and spray with spray oil or brush on oil (Image 1). Mix salt, garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley and black pepper in a small bowl. Season halibut on all sides with seasoning mixture (Image 2).

Step 2: Cook the fish and Make the Sauce

Place in an air fryer basket and air fry at 375F for 8-10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the filets. Check your halibut filet for an internal temperature of 130-135F (Image 3).

While the halibut cooks melt butter in a frying pan and add the garlic, cook over medium low heat until fragrant about 3 minutes. Add the capers, lemon juice and lemon zest (Image 4). Allow to simmer over low until the fish is done cooking.

Spoon warm sauce over the warm fish and serve with lemon wedges.

Storage, reheating and Freezing

Store leftover halibut in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two to three days. To reheat, put the halibut in the air fryer for a couple of minutes until warmed through. I love turning these leftovers into fish tacos.
