What type of grill is best for beginners?
Last year when I moved in with Amy I was an ultimate beginner on the grill. She has a very simple gas grill with 4 burners.
I recommend a simple gas grill for all beginners. On the flip side, I do not recommend a charcoal grill or a fancy gas grill for beginners.
Grilling is all about getting the temperature just right, almost like an oven, and when you use hot coals or a fancier grill, it can be harder to control the temperature.
What tools do I need to start grilling?
Once you have your grill, you don’t need much more to get started grilling. If you are using a gas grill, you will, of course, need a propane tank. You can pick one of these up at your local grocery store or hardware store.
You will also want to get a grill brush. Use this to keep your grill plates clean between uses.
It is good to have grill tongs and a spatula. You can use your kitchen items for this, but I like to have a specific grilling tool set in case they get extra dirty.
Finally, you will definitely need an instant read thermometer. This is useful when grilling any type of meat. As you can see in the chart above, you can use a thermometer to make sure your steak is grilled to the perfect temperature.
Give me some grilling basics
Okay, like I said, using your grill can be a lot like using your oven, but with some extra fire. The #1 thing you need to know is that you have to let it preheat. I almost always preheat my grill over high heat and then turn it down depening on what I need to cook.
Start by opening the propane tank connected to your grill. Then take the starter burner and turn it on to high. This will allow you to turn on all of the other burners.
I like to preheat my grill by turning all 4 burners on high. Then, I close the top and let it preheat to about 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once your grill is hot you can turn the burners down for each specific recipe.
Most of these easy summer grilling recipes will ask you to grill with the lid closed so just put your items on the grill, close the top and only open it to flip your items. If you are cooking meat, use an instant read thermometer to see if your dish is cooked through to the proper temperature.
